IBM has unveiled a new kind of server designed for “Web 2.0” companies that need thousands of machines to run their heavily trafficked sites. The new server, called the iDataPlex system, uses Linux as its operating system and was created to compete with so-called white-box PCs, which are linked together in networks by the thousands to run websites. The new server also houses Intel quad-core Xeon processors and consumes 40% less power than a traditional rack-mount system, primarily because it consumes less power for cooling. IBM is also bundling the IBM Rear Door Heat eXchanger in the server, which will allow the server to run at room temperature. In addition to these features, Blade Network Technologies will offer RackSwitch network virtualization switches for the iDataPlex. With this technology, multiple switches function as a single virtual switch, allowing virtual servers to be easily migrated and repurposed.
