Skype, a VoIP service provider, has launched an aggressive new calling subscription plan that charges a single monthly flat rate for international calling in about 34 countries. The plan reportedly will cover all calls to landline numbers and some cell phone calls. Subscribers can choose from three different plans and can get a 33% discount if they subscribe for 3 months or 12 months before June of this year. The rates are $2.95 per month for US and Canada only, while it will cost subscribers $5.95 per month to call Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. The rate will be $9.95 per month for a plan allowing calls to the full 34 countries covered. “This move is a natural step for Skype,” said Stefan Oberg, Skype’s VP and general manager for telecoms. “We’re making it even easier for the Skype community to call their friends and family who are not yet on Skype,” he added.
