The NPD group has released its monthly gaming industry sales report, and its numbers show that Nintendo’s sales of 720,000 Wiis topped video game console sales. Nintendo also had the best-selling game in “Super Smash Bros. Brawl,” which sold 2.7 million copies, according to the NPD numbers. Meanwhile, Microsoft saw the NPD numbers in its own way, declaring that “consumers continue to make the ultimate vote for Xbox 360 as the console of choice.” The basis for that claim? Figures revealing that gamers have spent more on Xboxes overall — $9.4 billion for the console’s “entire lifecycle” – than on competing consoles. As for the most current figures, the Xbox had a small advantage of about 5,000 unit sales for the month over the Sony Playstation 3. Sony is now banking on two new releases in the gaming arena, “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” and “Metal Gear Solid 4,” to give it an edge over its competitors. Overall software sales for the month amounted to a whopping $945.6 million, better than analysts had expected.
