PluggedIn, a new music video site, has been launched with 10,000 free high-definition music videos from Sony BMG and EMI. The brand-new Internet music service is being backed by Overbrook Entertainment, a media firm whose partners include actor Will Smith and music industry moguls James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz. The music site, hailed by the All-American Rejects and the Goo Goo Dolls as “the next generation of MTV,” offers DVD-like controls, fan community groups, and a multimedia search engine. The site hosts over 1 million musician and band profiles, including major artists such as Radiohead, Joss Stone, Norah Jones, Daft Punk, and KT Tunstall. Jeff Somers, CEO of PluggedIn, issued a press release saying that the site is “focused on building a unique experience for fans — a place where they can meet and interact with each other, and where they can enjoy, discover, and share premium quality video content.”
