Starbucks has recently been testing several new concepts, like trying out a new logo, letting customers be their own baristas at some stores, and introducing a new premium drip coffee. Free coffee was also recently handed out by baristas in Seattle when the company hosted a celebration of a new product at Pike Place Market. Customers are now even allowed to pay before or after pouring their own drip coffee at some stores. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is trying his best to halt declining sales with these innovative ideas, but he is also facing stiff competition from McDonald’s in the specialty coffee trade. According to reports, McDonald’s is launching unsnobbycoffee.com, which will target Washington State with printable coupons for a free espresso drink at any participating McCafe. Furthermore, bloggers note that 30% of McDonald’s 13,700 stores are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
