Movie rental giant Blockbuster has initiated a substantial broadening of its Blu-ray coverage, selling and renting high-definition movies in thousands of its stores throughout North America. “Blockbuster was the first national retailer to accurately recognize and react to consumers’ preference for this format when we added Blu-ray discs to a large percentage of our stores last summer,” said David Podeschi, Blockbuster’s senior vice president of merchandising, distribution, and logistics, in an official statement. Some bloggers have advised consumers that the cheapest way to get a Blu-ray player is by buying a PS3, which houses a Blu-ray drive within it, rather than buying a high-priced, standalone Blu-ray player. Even Blockbuster is trying to bolster Blu-ray sales by using the Sony PS3 Blu-ray drive as support for showcasing Blu-ray movies on 42" HD televisions.
