Video rental chain Blockbuster is planning to offer a set-top box that can stream Internet video to television sets, according to reports. An announcement is expected to come later this month from the company. The service is said to replicate one previously provided by Movielink, which was recently purchased by Blockbuster, and is expected to nurture video-on-demand technology. Movielink currently has a library of over 6,000 major studio movies. Meanwhile, Blockbuster rivals Netflix and LG have joined forces on a similar kind of plan in an alliance expected to pose tough competition for Blockbuster. Considering its longstanding relationships with movie studios, however, Blockbuster will likely have the largest library of films and TV shows to choose from, at least initially, giving it an edge over it various rivals, including Apple TV, TiVo, and Vudu.
