Google Inc. has now taken steps to introduce Gears support for Google documents, allowing offline storage and editing features for online documents, sources said. Google’s word processing feature will now be available offline and can be stored in a temporary format in the user’s computer. The feature is to be rolled out slowly, adding more and more users in the coming weeks. Google Gears is also expected to chalk out support for its other online applications, Google Spreadsheets and Google Presentations, which will soon put the company in direct competition with Microsoft Office. Google Gears, which is an open-source multi-platform application programming interface (API), is also expected to put up a tough fight with Microsoft’s Silverlight API and Adobe’s AIR API.
