Google has proposed a plan to foster wireless Internet use in a letter to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and has requested that the commission open up the so-called “white space” spectrum for that purpose. The letter states that Google would like to use the airwaves allocated for television broadcasting for its mobile services and also outlines its benefits. “Android-powered handsets” — the mobile handsets to be launched this year by Google — “would be an excellent match for the TV white space,” wrote Richard S. Whitt, Google’s Media & Telecom Counsel. Meanwhile, Google’s recently introduced teleporting feature has sparked the ire of some publishers and retailers. Objections were raised over the feature because it showed ads of competitors, though some merchants did find it useful for bringing shoppers to pages they are looking for.
