Verizon Communications recently participated in a study headed by researchers at Yale University which tested a software enhancement from Pando Networks Inc for peer-to-peer file sharing. The software is designed to enable faster downloads for P2P consumers and lower costs for Internet service providers. The test results showed that by using the software, the impact on Verizon’s network from P2P traffic was reduced drastically — by about 50%. The P2P protocol, which is used to send large files, including video content, over a network, is notorious for eating up network bandwidth, causing significant problems for ISPs. “This test signifies a turning point in the history of peer-to-peer technology and ISPs,” said Robert Levitan, chief executive of file-sharing company Pando Networks Inc. “It will definitely show ISPs that the problem is not peer-to-peer technology, the problem is how you deploy it.”
