YouTube has made its way into a medium other than the net by combining itself with television through an alliance with TiVo, the maker of digital video recorders. The deal will help YouTube deliver its videos directly to TV screens, thus bridging the gap between web video and TV to a large extent. TiVo’s deal with YouTube marks another entry into the marketplace for streaming web video on television; Apple Inc has already launched a similar effort with the introduction of its Apple TV in January. YouTube will be available to those TiVo users who have the latest hardware and a broadband connection. The YouTube option will go live later this year, according to company sources. Meanwhile, YouTube has even announced plans to provide users with free access to Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs) so that they can create, share, comment on videos, and even customize video content and players on the web, as well as on other media such as cell phones.
