Adobe has developed Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR 1.0), a free application which integrates itself with a computer’s desktop and constantly updates web information anytime, anywhere, without an open web browser. Several organizations, including AOL, eBay, and NASDAQ, have already embraced the technology since the release of the beta version last June. Randall Hopkins, Vice President of NASDAQ, said, “Creating an application on Adobe AIR lets us deliver valuable data analysis at a lower cost.” Adobe will also release the latest free version of its developer network, Flex 3, along with Adobe BlazeDS. Adobe hopes that it can expand beyond the Internet in desktop applications competing directly with Microsoft’s Silverlight. Sources note that if the Microsoft-Yahoo! deal goes through, Microsoft will replace the use of Flash with Silverlight on Yahoo! websites, increasing the latter’s usage drastically.
