Marketing Services: It's All about Pets...

An interesting trend is sweeping the country: it's suddenly no longer a big problem to keep a pet if you are working long hours or even going out of town on work-related trips. Companies like PetSmart are booming by providing day care and hotel accommodation services for pets. The CEO of PetSmart, Phillip Francis, says that the company is benefiting from ''the macronization of the humanization of pets,'' according to an article in the New York Times. The marketing of these services is enhanced by selling pet merchandise.

The fact that more and more pet owners are showing interest in buying various products for their pets has resulted in high sales for companies that provide pet services. The related fact that most vets now recommend that pet owners give their pets clinically proven supplements has also increased pet store sales. This increase in supplement sales is understandable given that pets, just like their human owners, undergo aging and all the associated health problems. As such, it is now not uncommon to walk into the house of a pet owner and notice a shelf stocked with calcium syrup, liver tonic, and vitamin supplements for the pet. Ever noticed those advertisements where super shiny Collies happily bounce around their owners? There is a thriving industry out there catering to the growing needs of pet owners who want the best for their pets.

And buying these pet products has become easier than ever. In addition to the regular supermarkets that stock pet products and the special pet stores, there are Internet sites that not only sell high quality pet products but also deliver them to your door step. With time being a precious commodity for working people, these websites are a blessing in disguise.

A fair amount of the marketing for such websites is accomplished by word of mouth. One person or a family uses a certain product and then recommends it to their friends, and so on. Companies also often take a more proactive approach to increasing awareness of their products among pet owners. This is achieved by having distributors who inform pet owners of their products and also give them samples to try.

The Humane Society of the United States reports that the average dog owner spends about $219 annually on veterinary visits, while cat owners spend about $175 per year. These statistics show quite clearly that pet owners are very willing to spend on their pets. Companies like PetSmart have reportedly seen an increase of $4.23 billion in their annual sales in the last year. Part of this increase has been attributed to the opening of numerous new stores.

So it seems that keeping pets at home while working is not really such a worrisome thing — as long as there are companies like PetSmart that provide quality pet-care services.
