A whopping 97.5 million viewers across the country are estimated to have watched last weekend’s Super Bowl, which saw the New England Patriots biting the dust against the New York Giants. The game registered as the second biggest television event in American history, only beaten by the M*A*S*H series finale of 1983, which reached 106 million viewers. According to Nielsen research, about 148.3 million viewers watched at least some stage of the game, which ended up 17-14 in favor of the Giants. Meanwhile, Fox Sports achieved the highest-rated week in primetime for any network in 11 years, owing to the Super Bowl, midweek airings of American Idol, and the special screening of a House episode.
