Superstores major Wal-Mart is contemplating introducing smaller stores in Arizona. Unconfirmed reports describe the stores as spaces that will be ten times smaller than the existing Wal-Mart superstores, which stand at 200,000 square feet. However, according to some reports, the company would be testing new store designs and formats to find out what appeals most to their customers. If true, analysts feel the move will bring Wal-Mart in competition with Tesco, which launched its Fresh & Easy chain of stores on the West Coast about two months back. According to the Wal-Mart homepage, strengths in grocery, pharmacy, and electronics drove comparable store sales during the five-week December period. Tesco operates around seven stores in Phoenix currently.
