According to a report by comScore, Inc., consumers spent more than $9.3 billion in online shopping this holiday season, an increase of 17% from last year. This holiday season e-commerce spending report covers the first 23 days (November 1-23) of the November-December holiday season.
Black Friday alone accounted for $531 million in online retail spending (an increase of 22% from last year), while Thanksgiving Day saw $272 million in online sales (a 29% increase from last year). comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni opines that Cyber Monday is expected to outnumber Black Friday sales and to exceed $700 million, making it the heaviest online shopping day on record.
With a continuous increase in the sales of Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and Halo 3, video games and consoles & accessories reported a whopping 134% raise from last year. Among other most-wanted categories, sales of furniture, appliances, and equipment category increased by 36%, followed by consumer electronics (an increase of 21%). Online sales of toys went up just 9%.
