In response to a recent increase in green advertising claims, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has accelerated its plans to review green marketing guidelines. The guidelines, also known as the Green Guides, were last updated in 1998, and the next review was scheduled for 2009. The FTC is reviewing the guide before the scheduled time, as it wants "to ensure they reflect today's marketplace." As a part of the review, the FTC will hold public meetings or workshops on various green marketing topics. The first workshop will address the marketing of carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates (RECs). It is slated for January 8, 2008, at the FTC's Conference Center. The initial comment period on the Green Guides will be open until February 11, 2008. The FTC will open a separate comment period for each public meeting.
