Prosecutor launches anti-drunk driving campaign
The Associated Press
Nov. 19, 2007 | PHOENIX
(AP) - Using the Web and billboards, Maricopa County's top prosecutor hopes a new campaign keeps drunk drivers off the road.
In announcing the campaign Sunday, County Attorney Andrew Thomas says a Web site along with billboards will display photographs of convicted DUI offenders.
"Unless they drink perpetually, they're going to realize the consequences," Thomas said.
Mug shots of convicted offenders will appear on a Web site called StopDUIAZ.com.
The site describes the arrest that led to their conviction and in some cases, will detail whether people were hurt.
Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale and Tempe are providing the information.
The campaign costs less than $700,000. Nearly $189,000 is from a state justice grant and the rest comes from a state operated fund containing assets seized from convicted offenders involved in corrupt organizations and racketeering, the county attorney's office said.
In Arizona, the bulk of the seized assets are spent on gang prevention with some dedicated to crime education and prevention campaigns.
